Temple at Kheerganga

There are many stories revolving around Kheerganga, some are satisfying some are just annoying. It’s up to you which story you believe. For me, the story I am writing now is what I believe is the most satisfying tale of this place. Hope you find it interesting too. So, what is the story of Kheerganga? As I have mentioned in my previous blog, the water here looks like milk flowing in the river. And there is a Kund at the top of Kheerganga. So, from all this, we can easily understand that this story is going to be related to “Kheer” and the “Ganga”.

Let’s start with the story of Kheerganga.

The story where Lord Ganesha and Lord Karthikey were challenged to a race around the world. They were fighting to determine which one of them had a faster vehicle, it all started there.

As the story continues, which in turn impressed both the gods and they were so impressed with Lord Ganesha, that they acclaimed that from now on Lord Ganesha is the God who’ll have to be served first in any kind of important prayers, whatsoever they be.

So, Lord Ganesha won the race without even participating in it and this made Lord Karthikey go into a state of a conundrum. Due to this, he decided to go into meditation all alone in Parvati valley. After hearing this Devi Parvati got worried, that his elder son is going into meditation without much preparation. To which she decided that for the sake of her elder son’s fooding, she’ll be having a river full of milk across the Parvati valley.

A story that everyone remembers, but what happened after that?

Now, Lord Karthikey did his meditation and through all that time, he had no problem with the foods, as the river full of milk all to himself.

But when his meditation was over and he was about to move out, the main problem was, the river was full of milk and it was called “Doodh Ganga”. And the Devi Parvati thought if this river will be like this then in “Kalyug” it will be misused by the people.

So, in order to solve this problem, Lord Shiva called upon Rishi Parshuram. And told him to take a look at the Doodh Ganga. To which headed to the Doodh Ganga and observed the marvel himself. And, he decided to make n offering to the god and himself too.

So, he poured some rice and other ingredients into a pot to make some kheer, as he used the milk from the river to prepare the kheer.

But to his dismay, even before he could have taken a bite, the pot he was keeping the kheer in, fell down and got spilled in the Doodhganga.

Angry Parshuram

This made Parshuram immensely angry. As he started to show his infuriating side, the gods decided to go and stop him before anything happens.

So, when the whole bunch of gods came across Parshuram and asked him what’s the matter? He replied that someone did this mishap on purpose and he did not like that a bit.

But Lord Shiva told him to take a deep look at the situation and actually check if there is something else at play? To which Parshuram listened and into a state of deep meditation.

Upon doing that, he could clearly hear the laughing voice of Doodhganga who appeared to be a playful little girl. Now, it was clear that she did this on purpose but in a light-hearted playful manner.

Now, after this incident, Parshuram got more influenced and cursed Doodhganga. And announced that she would be called Kheerganga from now on, taking away her identity. Also, he sealed her away for the whole kalyug.

He also claimed that during the Sataya yuga, she would have appeared back. But before that, she had to be in hiding. This is how Kheerganga was created out of chaos and formed into what we see today at the Parvati valley.

So, this was the story of Kheerganga.
